It may not seem like it, but turtles are one of the rare species capable of digging tunnels. These long, deep galleries help cool down many other species that take refuge there and usually coexist inside them.

These turtles therefore play an important role in the balance of animal life, especially during fires, by providing underground shelter for wildlife.

In this BBC video, they followed a turtle deep inside a tunnel using a specialized robot.
