The Switl device

In 2011, a Japanese company presented Switl, a tool that can pick up a viscous substance from a plastic surface without changing its shape.

The footage is quite impressive. Personally, I do not see many possible applications, but it is still surprising.

The principle is fairly simple: this robotic hand has a Teflon roller that slips between the solid surface and the liquid while spinning quickly in the right direction, moving the liquid onto the rotating plate. It then reverses to place it back on the table.

The most astonishing part is that the shape of the ketchup or mayonnaise during the demonstration does not change during the surface transitions.
