Japanese melons for up to โฌ40,000

Melons are a luxury in Japan. The farmers who grow them are artists who refine their techniques and regularly pamper their prestigious fruit.
In May 2019, two melons from Hokkaido were sold for 5 million yen, or โฌ40,000. You might think that is madness for a simple cucurbit, but this trade is juicy.
The high-quality melons sold at this price also contain seeds, allowing the variety to be reproduced.
However, not everyone is able to grow high-quality melons again. In this video, a "melon farmer artist" tells us that he keeps only one melon per shoot, then wraps it in paper at the right moment, covers it with newspaper during a key stage of development, rubs and caresses the melon to make sure its grooves are perfect. And the hardest part is managing the water supply so that everything is perfect.
Missing just one day would be enough for the melon to lose its top quality.
In Japanese society, melons are premium gifts that are part of a very upper-class custom.
